Barcelona Startup Conference 2024: Navigating the Path to Success

On October 1st, 2024, we had the privilege of attending the Barcelona Startup Conference 2024, a key gathering of number of startup founders and investors. Organized with the support of and held at the premises of Talent Garden Barcelona, the event provided invaluable insights for startups seeking to scale, secure funding, and navigate the dynamic entrepreneurial landscape.

Key Takeaways from the Conference

The evening kicked off with an introduction by Adam Fulham, Founder of Startup Network Europe & Product Network Europe. His opening remarks set the stage for what would be an inspiring event of discussions and knowledge-sharing.

One of the most insightful presentations was delivered by Chin Yung (CY) LU, Senior Vice President of Startups at Invest Hong Kong. His talk, “Hong Kong as Your Strategic Hub to Scale in Asia,” shed light on how startups can connect with the thriving ecosystem in Hong Kong. Here are a few highlights from his session:

  • Hong Kong’s startup ecosystem has been growing for 10 years and is highly diverse and agile.
  • It boasts a unique legal system that simplifies access to foreign investors and markets, distinct from mainland China.
  • English is one of the official languages, making it easier for international startups to establish themselves
  • Fintech, e-commerce, and B2B supply chain industries dominate, with opportunities for incubation and acceleration programs.

CY emphasized the importance of innovation, diversity, and agility in Hong Kong’s approach to startups.

Panel Discussion: Insights from Investors

Later, we heard from a panel of experienced investors and startup leaders. Here’s what they shared:

  • Yahel Halamish from Nina Capital shared insights into healthcare startups using AI as a tool, focusing on a data-driven approach.
  • Celeste Reglá Díaz from EIT Urban Mobilityemphasized sustainability, team diversity, and impact measurement across environment, society, health, and knowledge.
  • Pablo Szefner, Co-CEO at Platanomelón, shared his experience of building companies. He emphasized having a clear value proposition, keeping costs under control, and using technology to grow. His advice: Focus on the numbers and ensure both the product and market are a good fit.
  • Estefania Gual, Chief Product Officer at Vivara by GCO Ventures, highlighted on:

1.Product-market fit – Does your product solve real problems?

2.Profit-market fit – Are you focused on executing and making a profit?

  • Merce Tell, Co-Founder of Encomenda Capital Partners, emphasized diversity in ecosystems.
  • Sergio Gonzalez Gaspar, Co-founder of Remuner and Venture Partner at Antai Ventures, spoke about selecting the right investor and aligning on long-term goals.

One of the lovely moments of the event was the reminder that the most valuable “ship” is not made of wood or diamonds, but Friendship.
